BROOKLYN, Md.- (May 7)- Here at Thunder Dome, not your ordinary venue for a
boxing card to take place, Baltimore and D.C.’s up and coming amateur
talent once again had the opportunity to show off their skills before local
family and friends. Thunder Dome, Brooklyn’s answer for Philadelphia’s
Blue Horizon, is structurally similar to the famous two-story boxing venue,
where many viewings of USA’s Tuesday Night Fights took place. The only
thing missing on this night was the color and commentaries of Sean O’Grady
and Al Albert.
What wasn’t missing was a very dazzling performance from local Baltimore
talent, Josh Tingler, (147) from the Brooklyn Boxing Club. In the final
match of the evening of a nine-match card, Tingler masterfully mixed his
combinations and countered the daunting jabs of Kayode Abrams (147) from
Sugar Ray Leonard’s Gym in Palmer Park, Maryland to win a majority
decision over Abrams.
Tingler’s victory was not the only bright spot of the evening for the
fighters from The Brooklyn Boxing Club. In the first match of the evening,
Nick Kisner, (112) the son of boxing coach and gym owner, Danny Kisner, was
victorious over a very game Devon Jenkins in the junior bantamweight
division. In the second match, at 156 pounds, Eddie Gates, from Mack Lewis’
Gym, won by decision over a tough customer in Jon Gaddis from Nye’s Gym in
Lancaster, Pennsylvania.
In a women’s novice match at 139 pounds, Tricia Hanson, from the Brooklyn
Boxing Club, pretty much had her way with a newcomer in Rochelle Detter,
also from Nye’s. Hanson, coming off of her first loss as an amateur,
immediately stalked Detter from the get go and was relentlessly dictating
the action with an ‘in your face’ and toe-to-toe attack. The referee,
after having issued a few standing eight counts to Detter, stopped the
contest in the third round and awarded the match to Hanson.
The eighth match of the evening was also a women’s match at 156 pounds.
April Alvarez, from the Midtown Boxing Club, valiantly tried to overcome the
reach advantage that Christina Mellies, from Sugar Ray Leonard’s had over
her. Alvarez immediately crowded the taller Mellies from the start of round
one and tried to work the body, however, due to the experience of Mellies,
Alvarez was unable to sustain her inside body attack. Mellies established a
jab halfway through the first and never relinquished it from then on.
Mellies won the match by decision.
The results from other matches were as follows:
In another 156 pound pairing, Eddie Smith, from the Main Street Gym in
Salisbury, retired Steve Brooks from the Midtown early in the first when
Smith knocked Brooks down with a good right and the referee stopped the
contest when Brooks could not get by the count of ten. In a 132-pound open
match, Jerome Postley, also from the Main Street Gym, retired Samuel Jones
from Sugar Ray Leonard’s in the first when the referee stopped the
contest. What started out to be a real slugfest at 178 pounds turned out to
be a brief war of attrition when Tyrell Rogers, from the Laurel Boxing Club
stopped David Wheeler in the first round when the referee stopped the
contest. At an open 178 pounds, Sherman Copeland, from the Rosedale Boxing
Club stopped Stan Revis from Brooklyn in the second round when the referee
halted
the contest.
A thank you goes out once again, not only to Mr. Danny Kisner, for putting
on yet another exciting card of amateur action, but also to the owner of
Thunder Dome for providing the venue for this night of action, not to
mention the South Atlantic Association, in conjunction with USA Boxing, for
sanctioning this card. Without the efforts of all the above-mentioned
parties, this article, not to mention this card would not have been
possible. |
