Gorges Wins Ringside World
Championship Belt
by Margaret Sidoroff
(AUG 8) On August 2-6, 2005, the Border City Boxing Club had eight
boxers compete at this year's Ringside World Championships in Kansas
City this past week.
Andre Gorges (152 lb.) Senior Men's Open-Class) fought three times,
first defeating the 2005 Canadian Silver Medalist, Janks Trotter of
Alberta in the preliminaries, and going on to win a unanimous decision
over Enver Halili of Weatherford, Texas in the final. Halili had
defeated Border City's Lukas Welniak earlier in the competition.
Also Border City's eleven-year old Shelby
Bialkowski brought home the championship in the 90 lb. Girls' Novice
Class. Bialkowski defeated Kansas City's Kelly Martin by unanimous
decision. |

Border City's Jake Bath also has a good showing, defeating New Mexico's
Juan Martinez in the semi-finals, but dropping a decision to
Washington's Jerome Smith in the final. Also representing Border City
were Ali Youssef, who lost in the preliminaries to United States
Champion Issac Torres, Alison Hunter who dropped a split decision to
eventual champion Raven Roytblatt of New Jersey, Colin Sangster who lost
to David Madison of New York, and Josh Cameron who dropped a
controversial decision to Brian Culpepper of Philadelphia. The Ringside
World Championships is the world's largest amateur boxing tournament
including 15 different countries and 1500 competitors.
Retired World champion, Kim "Fireball" Messer, was also at the Ringside
World Championships, who was coaching a team at the tournament.
Comments from WBAN:
WBAN is very proud of what Kim Messer and
Margaret Sidoroff have been doing and
continue to do for the sport after both retiring from boxing
professionally. They are excellent role models for boxers pursuing their
dreams in the sport.
A special congratulations to Shelby, who won in the novice division, at
the tender age of 11. |
