Archuleta – Drexel bout canceled when Drexel comes in WAY over weight!
By Sue TL Fox
September 20, 2005

(SEPT 20) Tonight, in Denver, Colorado, Janae Archuleta was set to fight Brenda Drexel, of Texas in a scheduled four-round bout at 140 lbs. (plus or minus).

When Drexel arrived in Colorado for the weigh-in yesterday and climbed on the scales, no one imagined that she would top the scales at 184 lbs.!

Drexel told WBAN that she left for Colorado, she thought she weighed 155 lbs, and that she would drop the weight before the weigh-in. I asked her how she would go from 155 to 140 the same day she arrived, but she did not have a ready answer.

Drexel told WBAN, “From my heart, I am sincerely sorry.” She also told WBAN, that at 41 years old she is ready to retire. She is working with other women boxers, and is doing some coaching at this time.

Drexel’s manager, Willie Edwards told WBAN that he wanted to publicly apologize to Janae Archuleta and her team.

He told WBAN, “ I manage Brenda, but I don’t live in the same city as her. I would never knowingly bring someone to fight that hasn’t trained or isn’t in shape to fight.”
