"Team Mahfood" will be
competing in the 33rd annual Hawaii State Marathon on December 11, 2005.
This team consists of Valerie "Wolfe" Mahfood and her brother, Sebastian
"Weasel" Mahfood. Together, they have been in training since November of
last year and are finally ready to lace up their shoes for "this little
morning jog," says Valerie Mahfood.
Not only will the two be running for bragging rights, but they will also
be running to raise funds for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer
Foundation. Between them, they plan to raise $3,000 in donations by the
sale of "Team Mahfood" t-shirts and other sponsorship related funds.
T-shirts can be ordered to size, at a cost of $20 a shirt. 100% of the
profits will go to the cancer foundation.
When asked about the run, Valerie quickly answers. "I'm absolutely fired
up about this chance. I remember when I was 21, I made a 'list of life.'
There were five things on it that I wanted to accomplish before I died.
Finishing this marathon, completes four of the things on that list."
Sebastian, a former GWF wrestling champion, is just as excited about the
adventure. "I'm doing this because I didn't see any reason why I
couldn't do it. I had a year to train. I knew if I continued to work at
it, I would surely be ready for it. It's like that with all things in
life. If you keep trying, you will eventually succeed." Sebastian, by
the way, will be competing under his newly earned title of Doctor
Mahfood. Over the past year, not only has he worked at increasing his
daily mileage, but also earned a doctoral degree in Literature.
"Yeah, I'm impressed with his degree," says Valerie. "But whether I call
him Doctor Sebe or just plain Weasel, I'm still going to whoop his ass
in that marathon."
Sebastian, playing his education, quickly corrects her grammar. "Whip.
You're going to whip my ass."
"Glad you agree," Valerie says as the two continue in a slight moment of
sibling rivalry.
