The countdown to the end of one of the
most - if not the most - impressive career in women's boxing has
begun. Prior to her 44th World Championship fight last night, the 30
year old Regina Halmich had already declared, that this would be the
first of her three remaining fights. She has decided to end her
boxing career before her 31st birthday in November this year.
Halmich original opponent, Mary Elizabeth Ortega was suspended by
the Nevada Boxing Commission, which gave hungarian Reka Krempf a
chance to fight for the WIBF Flyweight World Title instead.
The scene was set in a sold out arena in Halle an der Saale, where
4,500 enthusiastic fans saw their "boxing queen", win a convincing
99-92, 98-93, 99-91 unanimous decision.

| Halmich, 111½, came forward
in her usual style and used her superior ring craft to
control the fight throughout the 10 rounds. Although Krempf,
111¼, fought gallantly and occasionally managed to
deliver telling punches, she did not have the tools to
counter Halmich"s persistent attacks. |

The German world champion,
has expressed her ambition to retire while on top and as
world champion, and last night's performance promises well
for her chances of achieving that.
During the interview after the fight, Halmich was asked if
she had any special wishes as far as opponents for her two
remaining fights, and she replied, that Terri Cruz was one
of the fighter she would like to face before hanging up the
gloves.
The recent speculation about a re match with TV presenter
Stefan Raab also came up in the interview. Regina Halmich
explained that she has been concentrating 100% onher title
defence and kept the subject of this show fight completely
out of her mind. She did confirm, that she is to have a
meeting with Stefan Raab, but it is still an open question
whether anything will become of the rematch.
In another bout Karolina Lukasik, 154, won by a split
decision, over Jill Emery, 152. Scores: 99-92, 97-93
and 94-96. The referee Daniel van de Wiele also acted as
judge, and he had Emery as the winner. |
