Women’s boxing in Germany

Female boxing legend Regina Halmich will fight her last fight on Friday, November 30 in her hometown Karlsruhe, Germany. For some time now, managers and promoters have been trying to build up a suitable successor, but at present the question of who is be able to step into Halmich’s shoes is still open. Juergen Lutz, the man who discovered Halmich, organised a boxing gala on Saturday, August 4 on the market place of Karlsruhe. The event gave several upcoming female boxers the opportunity to show their skills. The admission was free and Regina Halmich herself presented the event and her possible successors. Unfortunately, some boxers failed to appear and numerous fights were cancelled. The promoter made a virtue of necessity and showed the audience ten sparring fights instead. Of the announced matches only three took place.

Rola El Halabi (1-0-0, KO 1) made short work with her opponent Sabrina Stegner. The lightweight who was born in Beirut/Libanon and lives in Ulm/Germany floored professional debutant Stegner after only a couple of seconds with a straight right. Stegner was counted out sitting dazed on the canvas.

The evening’s second professional debut took a bit longer. Selina Ries, a protégé of Juergen Lutz, had to take on Irma Balijagic from Bosnia-Herzegovina. The whole match was a wild exchange of blows starting immediately when the fight began. After several hard hits, in the middle of the first round, the German corner threw in the towel and the flyweight fight ended with Balijagic declared the winner.

The longest and best fight of the evening was the professional debut of Özlem Asiye Sahin, who was born in Turkey and now lives in Ludwigsburg/Germany. The junior flyweight took on Michaela Rost (0-1-0, KO 0). Sahin showed that she is a complete boxer: good footwork, good cover, good attacks and various punch combinations. She was superior to her opponent in every department and one could not help getting the impression that Sahin could have ended the one-sided match any time she wanted to. Sahin possibly wanted to gain ring experiences and decided to go the full distance. The fight ended with an unanimous win on points for Sahin.

The question of who will take the throne of female boxing after Halmich is still open. But female boxing clearly has a future in Germany. And, who knows, this event in Karlsruhe may have already shown Halmich’s successor in the making.
