Reigning World and back-to-back European
lightweight champion Katie Taylor claimed her second Witch Cup gold
medal on the trot following an inside the distance win in her 60Kg
final with Eva Walstrom in Hungary tonight (August 11th).
Taylor, who was also presented with the boxer of the tournament
award, stopped the Finn on the 15 point rule in round two (15-0) to
finish on top of the podium.
The 15 point rule (20 point in men's boxing) obliges a ref to stop a
contest once a boxer goes 15 points ahead
except in the final round.
In her three fights in Hungary,Taylor, ranked number one in the
world, spent less than eleven minutes in the ring,
winning two fights inside the distance and racking up forty one
points while conceding just five against three boxers
who are all included in the top fifteen in the world rankings.
Today's victory will be the perfect boost for the 21 year old St
Fergal's Bray club woman who will be targeting her third European
gold medal on the trot in Denmark this October.
Commentating on the win coach Peter Taylor, who was in his daughters
corner in Pecs, said they were delighted with the
performance and the gold medal.
He said: "It is a great boost ahead of the European Championships as
this is a very competitive tournament and
most of the countries competing out here send their strongest
squads.
"Katie had a injury to her right elbow which prevented her from
throwing straight rights but the injury should be cleared up soon.
"We are delighted with the win and the boxer of the tournament award
and we are now looking forward to the European Championships."
