Latest Update on Katie Taylor
By Bernard O'Neill
September 7, 2007

IRISH world lightweight champion Katie Taylor will be doing her bit to help endorse women's boxing as a future Olympic sport when she takes part in an historic all female bout at the men's World Senior Championships which begin in Chicago next October.

Taylor-ranked number one in the world-will be targeting her third European title on the trot in Denmark in mid October,
and then meets Canadian Katie Dunne-ranked third in the world- at the World Championships at the University
of Illinois later that month.

The World Championships-which will also act as a qualifier for 2008 Olympics-is the biggest amateur boxing tournament
in the world this year. A record 115 nations will compete in the Windy City.

The Irish Amateur Boxing Association (IABA) accepted an invitation from the President of the World Amateur Boxing Association, Dr Ching-Kuo-Wu for Taylor to take part
in the World Championships.

She will move up to light welterweight for her clash with World Championships nronze medallist and Canadian and Pan American Games champion Dunn.

According to Taylor's coach and dad Peter Taylor, the all female showdown, which will be held on men's finals day, will be used to highlight the quality of female boxing.

Women's boxing has not been included for the Beijing Olympics but is strongly tipped to make it's debut at the London 2012 Olympics-108 years after men's boxing debuted at the 1904 Olympics in the USA.

But before 21 year old Taylor travels to Chicago she will be aiming to claim her third title in a row at the European Championships in Denmark in mid October.

Taylor will go into training camp in Norway for five weeks before the Europeans and then head straight to Chicago
after defending her title in Denmark.

Peter Taylor said: "We are delighted to have received the invitation through the Irish Amateur Boxing Association for Katie to box at the men's World Championships.

"The bout with Katie Dunn will be used to highlight the progress that women's amateur boxing has made over the last few years.

"It will be an excellent opportunity for women's boxing to make an impression at one of the biggest tournaments
in the world and hopefully the sport will then be included for the 2012 Olympics in London.

"Katie is facing a very busy few months and fingers crossed that she will be travelling to Chicago having won her
third European title in a row."
