(DEC 3) On December 1, 2007, at the
Lusaka’s Woodlands Stadium, in Lusaka Zambia, Belinda Laracuente
lost a controversial split decision against Africa’s Esther Phiri.
The two fought for the GBU super featherweight title.
In the Lusaka Times they reported that Phiri had “retained” her GBU
title, but “few many agree that the verdict was fair as America’s
Belinda Laracuente was a trifle better and could claim the glory as
well.”
They reported that Phiri was slower and could hardly match the
technique and sheer power of Laracuente. They went on to describe
Laracuente as “sharper, cleverer, and more aggressive” and that “an
ordinary eye” could have given her at least five out of the eight
rounds.
Laracuente said after the fight, “It’s a shame---I beat the girl on
points because I scored more as I was very aggressive. I feel it’s
very unfair.”
