… they'd be
scrabbling around right now for a fresh opponent for Alys "La
China" Sánchez on tomorrow night's "Noche de Superhéroes"
bill in the ATLAPA Convention Centre in Panama. As it is, she'll
just have to don the gloves and settle Kathia Montuto's hash in
a more prosaic fashion: hand to hand.
Whether she can
or not is anyone's guess. She hits hard, according to a report
on the public workout in the
Hipódromo Presidente Remón
last week ("...Montuto will have to exercise extreme caution,
or she'll get badly hurt..."), but, for the rest, we'll just
have to wait and see.
There are two
other women's fights on the bill – over 6 rounds at 126 pounds,
Ambar Fajardo will be giving Mónica Acosta a chance to override
the split decision that went against her when the two last met
(in December 2006) and, in another Venezuela v Colombia matchup,
Carolina "La Fiera" Álvarez will be fighting Omaira Suárez – but
the talk, understandably, has been of Sánchez, who will be
making her professional debut.
"Thank you
God!" begins a piece thrown up by Google from the online portal
of La Crítica. "Sensual and dangerous, that's Alys "La
China" Sánchez, the Venezuelan gladiatrix who has come to Panama
to sow terror in the nation's boxing rings..."
The fragment
breaks off at this point (a person on business from Porlock, I
expect) but never mind –as the song has it, we already bought
the dream.
