Mooney - Brakache bout ends in Draw
by Michael Rivest
May 17, 2008

(MAY 17) When a headliner drops out of a fight card, it usually means a dull night that crescendos to nothing. But when heavyweight, Shannon Miller, pulled out of last night’s Armageddon at the Armory in Albany, NY because of a torn tricep muscle that required immediate surgery (He was in the stands in cast and sling.), promoter Rick Sweeney pressed on, knowing he had the goods.

And by “goods,” I mean local sensation and WBE Champion, Liz “All Biz” Mooney (5-3-1). Liz (below in green) was matched with the State of Georgia’s Mariam “Punchenella” Brakache (5-6-1) in an 8-round battle, and from the opening bell it was clear this would be no easy fight for Liz. Brakache was sly and slippery, often throwing punches from odd angles and making Liz fight backing up, robbing her of her patented power.

The crowd registered its disappointment at the judges’ decision of “draw,” but it was the right one. Styles make fights, the saying goes, and in this fight Brakache’s style didn’t allow Liz to get set and throw the tight combinations that are capable of sending everybody home early.
Armageddon at the Armory went off as planned. Even without Shannon Miller, nobody went home disappointed.
