Comments about the bouts:

4/10/08 – Day Two

The US once again continued their dominance but suffered their first defeat in the competition. This came at the hands of Trinidad and Tobago’s Chimere Taylor. Taylor gave a commanding performance over a game Meredith Gustina. Gustina came from  8- 1 down in the first round to close the gap at 9-7 at the end of the second. Taylor however, pulled out all the stops and scored more than enough to enjoy a hard fought victory.

Trinidad’s Jamila Jones built up a good lead in the first round, 4-0 but ended the second round still at four whilst USA’s Jody Ann Weller scored one point. At the beginning of the third, Weller cam out with a flurry of punches and scored two quick points and with one minute to go, evened the score. Jones failed to improve on her initial score and Weller took the lead by one point and held on for a great come from behind victory.

Guyana’s Mandessa Moses did not give the performance she did at the CABA games a few months ago and suffered a blow-out loss to Brazil’s Ariana Araujo. Araujo fought very much like a professional, landing some devastating body shots. Credit had to be given Moses for making it through the three rounds.

Sunday 5th October 2008 - Day Three

Cynthia Moreno opened the night for the US and set the pace for a US four out of four victory margin when she defeated a game Liseth Loma from Ecuador.  Canada suffered their first and only defeat when American Carline Barry out-classed a spirited Jennifer Mc Connell. Mc Connell never stopped moving forward but she did so with her hands a bit too wide and Barry smartly stuck her straight shots directly through the guard.

Katie Dunn continued form where she left off on Day one of competition when she totally outworked Brazils’ Glauce Alves. Alves was the fighter to talk about on day one when she displayed excellent combinations and accurate punching. This time around however, Dunn made it very difficult for Alves as she presented a constantly moving target. The Canadian used speed and good ring-craft to clearly outscore her opponent.

The match-up between Brazil’s Elisangela Maartinelli and Puerto Rico’s Mercedes Alicea proved to be the bout of the night when the bout went from one side to the next. Alicea took the early lead but a persistent Maartinelli stuck to her guns and moved forward. It was a high skilled bout and Maartinelli did good to win by a two point margin.

WBAN would also like to add a result that we did not have in this story.  On October 3, 2008,former gold medalist, Cheryl Houlihan (San Diego)  beat Equador (Miaria Arcos) in a 14-0 decision.
