(OCT 16) Bonnie Canino, former world boxing and kickboxing champion, in the 1990s, will be honored on December 2, with induction into the Broward County (FL) Sports Hall of Fame along with six other area sports persons. The Hall of Fame was established to honor and recognize coaches, athletes and sports pioneers who are current or former residents of Broward County.

Bonnie Canino competed for nearly four years in the professional boxing ring and compiled a record of 11-4, including 2 KOs, from 1996 to 1999. She fought almost all of the leading female boxers in the lightweight division, including Deirdre Gogarty, Beverly Szymanski, Chevelle Hallback and Alicia Ashley. In June 2004, Canino stepped out of retirement, as a last minute opponent for Hallback, preserving a spot for female boxers on a card in Lincoln City, OR, after the original opponent had backed out of the bout.

Canino has continued, to the present time, to exhibit that same type of energy and dedication to the sport of Women's boxing, as a coach, guiding young women through the myriad levels of the amateur and professional levels of the sport and as the driving force behind the National Women's Golden Gloves Boxing Tournament held annually in Hollywood, FL.
