Ireland News: Ahmet Comert Cup
by Bernard O'Neill
April 18, 2009

(APR 18)  Katie Taylor, Paddy Barnes and Eric Donovan joined Carl Frampton in the semi finals of the Ahmet Comert Cup and guaranteed Ireland at least four bronze medals following quarter finals in Istanbul, Turkey tonight.

But John Joe Joyce and John Joe Nevin, who represented Ireland at the 29th Olympiad in Beijing, are out of the  international box-off after losing out three fights from gold.

Frampton, who boxes out of the Midland club in Belfast, progressed to the last four following an impressive 7-2 victory over Ukrainian featherweight Oleg Malynosky.

And Barnes, from the Holy Family club in Belfast, followed that up with a 5-0 win over Pakistani light flyweight Nadir Banishan to add to the bronze medal he won at the Beijing Olympics.

Taylor, the reigning World and European champion,  continued the winning streak after out-pointing Czech lightweight Danus Dilhofova 11-2 to set up tomorrow's clash with Russian, Daria Abhramova.

But John Joe Nevin, the reigning EU champion, is out of the tournament following a controversial 6-5 defeat to Algerian bantamweight Quarradi Abdelhalim, who he beat in last summers Olympics.

Nevin received two public warnings in this 54Kg last eight clash.

Donovan meanwhile, continued his impressive form with a 4-1 victory over Iranian lightweight Mehdi Raayat and will meet Cuban lightweight Idil Leal tomorrow.

John Joe Joyce lost 4-0 Traian Lupo of Romania today.
