Malpartida Retains WBA Belt
June 21 2009

(JUNE 21) Last night at the Coliseo Dibos Dammert, in Lima, Peru, Kina Malpartida did not disappoint local fans when she stopped Halana Dos Santos in the seventh round of a scheduled 10-round bout. Malpartida was defending her WBA super featherweight title. After the fight Malpartida said, "I dedicate this triumph to the very poorest, to those who struggle, to all of Peru and to my father." According to news sources Malpartida will be defending her WBA title in Peru again in three months.

The RPP website reported the following: In the gallery, there were dozens of banners and placards bearing messages of encouragement for the Peruvian girl; everyone was chanting 'Kina' with one voice; the Mexican wave began doing the rounds of the Coliseum as early as the third minute. It was a fiesta.

The children were ecstatic, with their popsicles bearing Kina's image, their t-shirts and caps in the Peruvian team colors, and their faces alight with enthusiasm. The lower part of the Coliseum was a catwalk with young ladies to suit all tastes parading the latest fashions, each trailing a long halo of light in her wake.

There were sporting officials, too, as well as singers, football players and stars of Peruvian TV. It was an event that no one wanted to miss and Kina responded with adamantine resolution serving a banquet of excitement from which no one went away hungy. We have a champion to bear on our shoulders. Go Kina!"
