Open Letter: Story on Lessons From the Cage
by Joe Rodriguez
August 26, 2009

(AUG 26) Reading the recent story that Bernie McCoy wrote, "Lessons From the Cage" gives me the chills. I have been thinking the very same way for the last two years. Promotion of the sport of women boxing is the key factor in insuring the surviving of the sport.

Now, let's take it a little bit further than that. Promoters and their promotions are the only ones that can insured the resuscitation and the healing of the injured sport of women boxing.

There are very big successful Promoters that will not include women bouts on their shows. I have called many of these promoters, many times about our gym's women boxers and I have never had a courtesy call back. Promoters have the expertise to promote boxing, they have the money and the manpower to make this happened.

Thanks to the few promoters who do their best to enrich and promote women boxing like Roy Englebrecht of California, and Lenny Fresquez of New Mexico. They have at least one women bout in almost all their shows.

The great Don King brought new heights to women's boxing with The Promotion of Christi Martin. Thanks to Don king there was an infusion in boxing of talented women boxers not just in this country but around the world. Then came A Ring of Their Own with Arnie "Tokyo" Rosenthal and Ken Weiss with the Rock & Sock Promotions who gave their all to the sport of women boxing.

WBAN is the only voice that is heard around the world on behalf of women boxing. Could you imagine if they weren't around?

Promotion is the key to women boxing's success. YOU, PROMOTERS OUT THERE, ARE YOU LISTENING?
