Luna Fights For GBU Title
Photos & Story by
Lori Steinhorst
October 26, 2010

When Rhonda Luna (15-2-2 2KO’s) meets Ela Nunez (9-6-1 2KO’s) on Thursday October 28, 2010 to battle it out for the GBU Women’s Super featherweight Title it will be a dream come true for the veteran fighter. “Here I am, finally, fighting at home on a level playing field. No stress, just training. No travel, just training. There is nothing else to fight, but another fighter, finally.”

Rhonda’s preparation for this fight is no different than any other fight I have seen her prepare for. It is the same Rhonda Luna. Her work ethic has always been impeccable. She is a dedicated athlete and a proficient boxer. Luna like many others, has committed several years of her life to her passion for boxing, yet she has received little for her efforts. There were times that she felt like she wanted to let go and move on. However, there is the fire that burns within the soul of this veteran fighter, and that fire would not let her quit. “Something would always come up to keep my hope alive. I knew that I deserved this opportunity; I had worked so hard for it. Now that it is here I am excited…everyone who has watched me labor for this is excited along with me. My time is finally here.”

Luna has a quiet soft spoken manner about her. Although she appears somewhat serious for the most part, at any given moment she can surprise you with her quick wit and playful sense of humor. Rhonda is a gentle soul by nature, however, when called to do so, one hell of a warrior will break loose and bust you up!

Rhonda, to the best of my knowledge, is the only woman to have been signed to a contract with Golden Boy Promotions. She knows the difficulty in making it on to a big card, or any card for that matter. Since her six fight contract with Golden Boy expired, it has been rough to get the fight opportunities she had hoped for. “I have always been here” she said, “they just looked right passed me.” Hoping that promoters will start looking at the quality women fighters again, Luna will be standing right in front of them as always.

So, in a fight that promises to shake and rattle the local venue of the San Manual Indian Bingo and Casino in Highland, California, Luna intends to show the world why they should not look passed her anymore. This is the kind of fight all of us in women’s boxing look forward to. Kudo’s to Patrick Ortiz for recognizing the talent of these two women and show casing them as a Main Event!
