Lopes Wins by Decision in Rhode Island
Story by KEN CASTRO
March 24, 2012

(MAR 24)  LINCOLN, R.I.--The old adage that a ‘win is a win’ certainly applied to Aleksandra Lopes’ in her Welterweight match up with Ashleigh Curry at the Twin River Casino Event Center in Lincoln, Rhode Island Thursday night.

Lopes collected a 40-36, 39-37, 39-37 four round unanimous decision victory over Curry in a fight that had both boxers admitted they were perplexed at their opponents respective styles. The results of which produced a few unexpected lulls in the action.

“It was awkward right from the start,” said Lopes of the divergent approach of each boxer. “If styles make fights, we just never got into a rhythm.”

Lopes, a native of Gliwice, Poland, fighting out of Quincy, MA upped her record to 6-1, 1 KO with the positive result. The nine-fight card was promoted by part of promoter Jimmy Burchfield’s Thursday Night Fight Series.

Lopes broke the pattern of inactivity that had prevailed from the beginning of the opening round when she fired off two quick straight rights that scored midway through. Both boxers worked outside for the remainder final 45 seconds, with Lopes being more methodical in moving forward.

Curry, who resides in St. Joseph, MO, and was fighting for the first time in the New England area stayed well out of Lopes’ power for the majority of the four rounder. “It was a little different. I think part of it is that I haven’t fought anyone of her quality before,” she said of the plan.

The lone, significant flurry in the bout occurred in the waning seconds of the third. The exchange would be repeated once in the fourth round, albeit of a lesser quality exchange.

Lopes’ last loss came to Kali Reis back in March of 2009 in a four round unanimous decision at Plymouth Ma. She subsequently overcame Reis in a majority decision 16 months later at the Twin River venue.

Curry was coming off a four round unanimous decision victory over Liz Drew last November.
