Latest News on Trinidad's Amateur Boxing Team!
September 12, 2013

(SEPT 12)  Three of the top members of the Trinidad & Tobago amateur female boxing team have been in training camp for the past two weeks at Canino’s Boxing Gym in South Florida under the coaching of Bonnie Canino, along with the Trinidad coach Ria Ramnarine and manager Corsilda Skeete.

The team isn’t preparing for any particular competition but hopes that the experience of this camp will propel them towards success in bouts later in the year. Trinidad is trying to get an edge with their female boxing team by introducing them to different styles of boxers and boxing, and up to the caliber of conditioning that should be expected in each of them. They are also being exposed to new techniques and strategy which will add to their game plan for performance in the ring. Coach Canino has been able to put a lot into the two short weeks and is pleased with the progress thus far.

Canino said that being on a small island doesn’t give the girls much diversity in their boxing, and they don’t get as much competition as is needed. “I hope it this camp and what I am showing them make a change in how they see and do things. We wanted to get them some matches while they are here, but because of a delay in their arrival, there aren’t any shows scheduled before they leave”.

The T&T team hopes this is not the last time that they will be here. In fact Canino has outlined a plan for 2014 - a two month training camp during which they can also make it to all the tournaments that are open for international competitors to attend here in the USA.

Ramnarine said Bonnie and her assistant coach, Yvonne Reis, have welcomed my team and they are doing everything possible to ensure that the girls gain as much as they can from this camp. I would like to publicly thank both of them, as well as the rest of the gym members and other boxers who come in to spar, train or simply support us. And also many thanks to Sue Fox for introducing me to Bonnie back in 2005”!!
