A Junior World Championships Medalist Showdown Headlines Day Two of the 2015 Junior Open and Youth National Championships
by Julie Goldsticker
January 7, 2015

(JAN 7) (RENO, NEVADA.) – The second day of 2015 Junior Open and Youth National Championships featured multiple top ranked athletes, several returning national champions and two former junior world championships medalists.  Fifty-seven preliminary round bouts were contested across two sessions on Tuesday at the Grand Sierra Resort in Reno, Nev.

The most anticipated bout of the tournament fell on the second day of the competition and the skillful contest lived up to the expectations. Fans and fellow boxers packed around the ring as Youth Olympic champion and two-time world champion Shakur Stevenson (Newark, N.J.) took on 2013 Junior World Championships silver medalist and two-time Junior Olympic titlist Daniel Gonzalez (Moreno Valley, Calif.). Gonzalez made his youth debut in the bantamweight contest as both boxers competed for the third straight year in Reno. Each athlete enjoyed his own cheering section throughout the contest, but only one could emerge victorious. Stevenson took the win by unanimous decision to advance on in tournament action.

The bantamweight battle wasn’t the only match-up between former champions on Tuesday. In the light welterweight division, former Junior Olympic national champion Mark Dawson (Philadelphia, Pa.) battled defending Junior Open titlist Money Powell (Fort Mitchell, Ala.) for a spot in the quarterfinal round. Dawson moved one step closer to his first youth national title with a 3-0 victory over Powell.

The light welterweight division showcased one of the most fan friendly bouts of the evening session as well. With the loud support of his New York teammates, Richardson Hitchins (Brooklyn, N.Y.) pulled out a split decision victory in an entertaining slugfest with Nevada native Isaac Lujan (Las Vegas, Nev.). Former Junior Open champion Keoni Adric (Haleiwa, Hawaii) advanced in light welterweight division on Tuesday night as well.

Two reigning Youth Open champions faced off in middleweight preliminary round competition in the final bout of the day. Welterweight titlist Javier Estrada (Palmdale, Calif.) moved up to the middleweight division and challenged 2014 gold medalist Charles Conwell (Cleveland, Ohio) in the 2015 tournament debut for both boxers. Conwell refused to relinquish his weight division to his fellow champion, winning a 3-0 decision in the preliminary bout.

2014 Junior Open champion and outstanding boxer Victor Morales (Vancouver, Ore.) and his younger brother Tyler Morales (Vancouver, Ore.) both enjoyed preliminary victories on Tuesday and will return in tournament competition on Wednesday.

Reigning Junior Olympic national champion Andres Borrego (Denver, Colo.) also enjoyed a victory in junior division competition in the day’s early session, winning a unanimous decision over fellow mile high city native Christian Torres (Denver, Colo.) in the light welterweight division.
