Thirty-Five Action Packed Bouts Highlight the Second Day of USA Boxing Elite National Championships Action
by Julie Goldsticker
January 22, 2014

(JAN 22) (SPOKANE, WASH.) – 2014 USA Boxing Elite National Championships action moved into day two at the HUB Sports Center on Tuesday night with 35 bouts in preliminary competition. The women made their tournament debut with matches in the bantamweight and light welterweight classes while elite men in six different weight divisions stepped through the ropes on Tuesday night.

It was the heavier weights kicking off the night’s action in Spokane on Tuesday and once again a Washington state boxer earned the first victory of the session. Dugan Lawton (Tacoma, Wash.) won a split decision over Xavier Hayden (Minneapolis, Minn.) in light heavyweight action to open the day’s competition.

Several familiar faces from the 2013 USA Boxing National Championships fell in their tournament openers on Tuesday night. Featherweight silver medalist Stephen Fulton (Philadelphia, Pa.) dropped his bantamweight bout to Israel Mercado (Montclair, Calif.) in their preliminary round contest. Fellow 2013 finalist Nicholas Jefferson (Tacoma, Wash.) suffered the same fate in his light welterweight bout with Efrain Estrada (Hillsboro, Ore.), dropping a 3-0 decision.

Estrada, the older brother of 2014 Junior and Youth Open champion and junior female outstanding boxer Diana Estrada, wasn’t the only elder sibling of a Reno titlist to win on Tuesday night. Estrada’s fellow Junior and Youth Open champion and youth female outstanding boxer Jajaira Gonzalez’s brother Jousce Gonzalez (Glendora, Calif.) took a unanimous decision win over Cirilo Avellanda (Baytown, Texas) in their lightweight bout on Tuesday as well.

Defending light welterweight champion Jose Alday (Odessa, Texas) won his first bout at his new welterweight division, taking a victory over Ardreal Holmes (Flint, Mich.) in his 2014 tournament opener. In middleweight action, reigning titlist LeShawn Rodriquez (Shirley, N.Y.) took a preliminary win in his first contest as well, winning a 3-0 decision over Clinso Brumfield (Alexandria, Va.).

2014 USA Boxing National Championships quarterfinal action will begin at 3 p.m. on Wednesday at the HUB Sports Center with all of the bouts being contested in one combined session. All of Wednesday’s winners will move on to semifinal round action on Friday at the Northern Quest Resort and Casino.
