On the Horizon for Women's Boxing in February
January 24, 2014

(JAN 24) January has been a fairly busy month for women's boxing fans as 2014 launched with a number of entertaining and high profile fights. To recap a few of the most significant developments we've already seen this year, here's a quick look back at some recent fights:

  • On January 4th in Buenos Aires: Daniela Bermudez won a decisive TKO victory over Linda Laura Lecca for the WBO junior bantamweight title.
  • On January 11th in Mexico City: Ana Victoria announced herself on the flyweight scene by securing a win in her first fight as a professional boxer.
  • On January 18th in Buenos Aire: The WBA light welterweight title changed hands when Ana Laura Esteche won by unanimous decision over Monica Silva Acosta.
  • On January 18th in New York, New York: Keisher McLeod-Wells and Monica Flores went 10 tense rounds vying for the WIBA flyweight title. McLeod-Wells came out on top by decision and took the title.
For a full list of January bouts and results, see our outcomes page, but these were definitely some of the biggest headlines regarding title matches and exciting debuts in January. February looks to be a little bit quieter, but there is at least one high-profile women's match to get excited about. Looking ahead, here's a brief preview of this bout along with a few of the more anticipated men's fights coming in the next month.

Kristin Gearhart vs. Allanna Jones

This fight on February 7th in Chicago will be in the female junior welterweight division, and it serves the second meeting between the two fighters in four months. In late November, as readers may recall, Gearhart won a four-round unanimous decision over Jones. She is therefore a heavy favorite win against Jones once again.

Lee Selby vs. Lendall Munroe

This will be an exciting men's bout for European boxing fans, because the two will be vying for the European featherweight title (currently not held by a competitor). The event will be broadcasted on the AWE network and should be an entertaining fight.

Daniel Geale vs. Garth Wood

This event from Sydney will mark—as ESPN mentioned— return of Geale, a world middleweight titleholder who's been out of the ring since losing his title to Darren Barker. Early odds are not yet out. Yet, while Wood is expected to put forth a tenacious effort, Geale has to be the favorite. There are more fights scheduled for February, but these are certainly highlights on both the women's and men's side of things. It should be yet another fun month!
