Voraberger Edges Domsodi in Close Call, Retains WBF and WIBF World Titles
press release
November 03, 2014

(NOV 03)  After a very dramatic fight that was always in the balance, WBF World Super Flyweight Champion Eva Voraberger retained her title by the thinnest of margins against Hungarian challenger Renata Domsodi on Saturday night, November 1, at the Admiral Dome in Vienna, Austria.  [She also won the WIBF title]

Voraberger started slow, and Domsodi seemed to favor her chances early on. A perfect right hand not only floored the champion heavily in the third round but also broke her jaw, and at that point it looked as if the title could very well be changing hands.

Eva barely beat the count at 9 ¾, and could very well have been stopped. However, referee Ernst Salzgeber let her continue and she saw out the round only just. Incredibly, Voraberger then rallied back, and was ahead on two scorecards after seven rounds.

Domsodi then finished the bout strongly, and after ten cracking rounds it could have gone either way. Austrian Judge Otto Lorenz scored the fight 95-94 for Domsodi, while Hungarian judge Tamas Sasvari favored Voraberger by the same margin. The decider came from German judge Jean-Marcel Nartz, who also had it 95-94 for the champion.

While the decision was booed by the crowd of 1500 fans, it was literally one of those fights where you could argue for either boxer deserving to win. Voraberger showed true sportsmanship after the fight, and made it clear how she sympathized with the unlucky challenger and that a rematch should happen.

Voraberger improved her professional record to 19-3 (9), while Domsodi, after this her fourth unsuccessful world title-challenge, falls to 12-6 (5). Both boxers certainly did their sport proud in this one, and it can only be hoped that they will do it all over again in the not too distant future.

Promoter was Boxteam Vienna.
