GB Championships set for EIS Sheffield on 26th November
by Michael O'Neill
November 5, 2015

(NOV 5)  The British Amateur Boxing Association (BABA) has named 12 boxers to compete in the GB Boxing Championship 2015 at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield on Thursday 26 November 2015 (Doors open at 6.00pm, boxing begins at 6.30pm).

This tournament though should not be confused with the National Elite Championships which for 2016 are due to take place (quarter finals, semi-finals and finals) between April and May. Venues will be confirmed at a later date.

It has been a busy time for the nation’s top boxers many of whom have just arrived home from the Queen’s Cup event in Stralsund, Germany.

There England's women took three gold medals and two bronze.

Nina Smith took gold at 57kg with a split decision over Tatiana Zrazhevskaia of Russia. Chantelle Cameron beat Agnes Alexiusson of Sweden on split points at 60kg, and Savannah Marshall enjoyed a unanimous victory over German Sarah Scheurich at 75kg.

Boxing in her third bout in as many days, Stacey Copeland won bronze after losing at 69kg to Welsh boxer Lauren Price. Bronze also went to England's Tanya Dady, who lost a split points decision to Ekaterina Pinigina of Russia.

The BABA's selection for Sheffield includes 2015 World championship silver medallists, Lisa Whiteside and Sandy Ryan, and 2012 World Champion, Savannah Marshall.

The women's middleweight contest will pit Marshall against another member of the GB Boxing squad as she faces Three Nations champion, Natasha Gale, who will be boxing in front of her home town crowd.

If a boxer that is not currently part of the GB Boxing squad wins the GB Championship they will secure an assessment with the squad and an opportunity to join the World Class Performance Programme (WCPP) for boxing as a funded athlete. The full line-up for the three Women’s Olympic weights :

WOMEN'S

Flyweight, 51kg:
Lisa Whiteside (ENG), Larches & Savick
versus
Kim Shannon (ENG), 2nd City

Lightweight, 60kg:
Sandy Ryan (ENG), One Nation ABC
Versus
Charlene Jones (WAL), Merlin's Bridge ABC

Middleweight, 75kg:
Savannah Marshall (ENG), Hartlepool Headland ABC
versus

The BABA's Performance Director, Rob McCracken, said: "This tournament is a great opportunity to look at some of the up-and-coming talent in Great Britain and a chance for some boxers to stake their claim for a place on the World Class Performance Programme and showcase their talent."

Anyone that purchases a ticket at the discounted rate will be entered into a free prize draw to win a boxing glove signed by Team GB's boxing medallists from the 2012 Olympic Games.
