(FEB 9) WBO flyweight champion
Kenia Enriquez (13-0, 6KO) held her first ever all-female
amateur boxing tournament in her native city of Tijuana this
past Saturday, February 7th. Held at the city-run gym adjacent
to the Municipal Auditorium, over ten amateur fights were held
to determine champs in five categories.
Young ladies from the
ages of ten to the twenty-one participated in the tournament and
sought to win the trophy title belt and a medal donated by
Mauricio Sulaiman of the WBC. The champion and sub-champion of
each category also took home a t-shirt deeming them as such and
every participant was awarded a certificate praising their
participation in the competition.
"I am very happy to have been able to realize this dream," an
all-smiles Enriquez stated. "After winning my world title last
year, I wanted to do something for all the girls that come up to
me and tell me that I have inspired them in some way. What they
don't know is that they are one of my motivations in my career
because I want to show them what hard work can lead to. I want
to thank the WBC, my promoter Bobby DePhilippis, my sponsors
especially Sue Fox of the WBAN and my team who helped me put
this together. I plan to do it every year around the same date."
Enriquez is scheduled to return to the ring to defend her title
on February 28th in Rosarito, just a fifteen miles south of
Tijuana, Mexico. Headlining the card will be WBC and WBA interim
champion Jackie Nava.
