Sixty-Seven Boxers Advances to the Medal Round at the Junior Open and Youth National Championships
by Julie Goldsticker
January 8, 2016

(JAN 8)  RENO, NEV. - Thursday's quarterfinal round featured the heaviest day of competition at the 2016 Junior Open and Youth National Championships in Reno, Nev. More than 65 bouts were contested today at the Grand Sierra Resort Summit Pavilion with all of the day's competitors advancing on to Friday's semifinals.

The female competitors took the ring for the first time in Thursday's evening competition and Iyana Verduzco (East Los Angeles, Calif.) earned the first victory of the tournament for the women's contingent. Verduzco earned a TKO victory in the second round of her bout with Natalie Dove (Philadelphia, Pa.) to move on to the junior women's pinweight semifinal bout. 2015 Junior Olympic national champion Diana Estrada (Hillsboro, Ore.) claimed her first win in the youth division with a split decision win over Leslie Soto (Las Vegas, Nev.) in youth women's featherweight competition.

A pair of brothers advanced to the semifinal round together on Thursday in Reno. Junior division light flyweight Sean Garcia (Victorville, Calif.) and youth division lightweight Ryan Garcia (Victorville, Calif.) each earned quarterfinal victories to secure their berths in the medal round. Younger brother Sean won his spot first, taking a unanimous decision victory over Brian Velasquez (Phoenix, Ariz.) in Thursday's early session and big brother Ryan followed suit in evening action, winning a 3-0 bout over 2015 bronze medalist Emmanuel Rojas (Las Vegas, Nev.).

2015 World Championships pinweight silver medalist Jesse Rodriguez (San Antonio, Texas) faced off with a fellow Texan in his quarterfinal bout, but he made it a short afternoon in the quarterfinal bout. Rodriguez won a second round TKO over Judah Rodriguez (Humble, Texas) to advance to his second straight semifinal round.

Rodriguez's fellow World Championships medalist Gabriel Flores (Stockton, Calif.) joined his teammate in the medal round with a third round TKO victory over Saul Rosales (Santa Ana, Calif.) in their featherweight contest.

2015 Junior Olympic champion Japhthlee Llamido (Norwalk, Calif.) clinched his spot in the semifinals in his first national tournament in the youth division with a split decision victory over Robert Bowers (Winder, Ga.) in the light flyweight competition.

Returning youth champion Dylan Price (Sickerville, N.J.) is hoping to defend his 2015 title in Reno and he moved one step closer with a 3-0 victory over Jordan Aguilar-Sanchez (Las Vegas, Nev.) in their light flyweight quarterfinal match-up.

Two 2015 national champions from Michigan each earned semifinal berths with victories in the evening session. Welterweight Joey Spencer (Linden, Mich.) won a 3-0 decision over Alexis Chaparro (Ridgewood, N.Y.) and junior middleweight Leon Lawson (Flint, Mich.) took a unanimous victory over Francis Oran (Allentown, Pa.) to move on in the tournament.

2014 Junior Open and Junior Olympic national champion Troy Isley (Alexandria, Va.) returned to the event after a one-year absence on Thursday and he emerged victorious in his tournament opener. Isley won a unanimous decision over Roman Ruiz (Buda, Texas) in youth division middleweight competition.

2015 Junior Olympic national champion Najee Lopez (Lithonia, Ga.) engaged in one of the exciting bouts of the day with Amisael Jimenez (Sacramento, Calif.) in youth division light heavyweight competition. Lopez won the slugfest by split decision to move on to the semifinal round.

Semifinal competition will take place at noon and 6 p.m. on Friday at the Grand Sierra Resort Summit Pavilion. Flo Sports is live streaming all the action on their boxing channel and it can be purchased via this link.
