Korean Sensation Hyun-Mi Choi Going For WBF World Crown
Source: Press Release
May 15, 2016

(MAY 15)  Korean boxing sensation Hyun-Mi-Choi is looking to build on one of the most extraordinary resumes in female boxing, when she takes on former world champion Unathi Myekeni from South Africa for the vacant World Boxing Federation (WBF) Womens World Super Featherweight title on Saturday May 21 in Jinju, South Korea.

Only 25 years old, Choi, 12-0-1 (4), is a former undefeated WBA World Featherweight Champion and the reigning WBA World Super Featherweight Champion, and amazingly twelve of her thirteen bouts recorded by BoxRec was for a world championship.

A defector from the dictatorship of North Korea, all of her professional fights has taken place in South Korea where she enjoys massive popularity. Her fights are usually televised to the country´s more than fifty million people by KBSN Sports, generating huge viewing numbers.

Unathi “Showtime” Myekeni, 10-2-1 (4), from Mdantsane in South Africa´s Eastern Cape province, will be going to Jinju to attempt to regain former glory. After turning professional in 2007, she won the WBF world Super Bantamweight title in 2010 but was never given an opportunity to defend it.

Last August she came up short in a challenge for her former WBF crown, when she lost a razor-thin majority decision to compatriot Gabisile Tshabalala, and has since been waiting for another chance to become world champion. While moving up in weight to face Choi is a daunting task, it is one she claims to be more than ready for.

The Hyun-Mi Choi vs. Unathi Myekeni World Boxing Federation (WBF) Womens World Super Featherweight title fight on May 21 at the Pearl Gymnasium in Jinju, South Korea, will be supervised by WBF President Howard Goldberg, who recently expressed his anticipations for the encounter, saying:

“This is a fantastic fight for womens boxing. An undefeated national hero taking on a former world champion, still on top of her game, can only be a great fight. I expect that Choi will be trying to put on a show for her fans, but Myekeni is perhaps her toughest opponent to date so I expect fireworks!”
