(AUG 5) Born in Brooklyn,
New York, USA, on June 18, 2003, Faith Mendez, now 13
years old, is trained and mentored by her father Carlos
Mendez, at the Almighty Boxing Club in Reading, PA.
Carlos Mendez and his wife Sandra
have a total of 5 daughters, Sharline Mendez, Christina Mendez,
Anna Mendez, Charly Leeann Mendez, and Faith Destiny Mendez, the
youngest. All 5 at some point boxed amateur.
Of the five 'Mendez' girls, the Eldest Sharline boxed the
longest as an amatuer. The other three Mendez girls participated
in boxing but none however liked it as much as Sharline, and now
Faith has begun her trek in the Sport.
Mendez tells WBAN that since Faith was a little girl she had
been watching her sisters but more so Sharline and that she kept
telling him that she wanted to do what Sharline was doing; "I
want to box Papi," Faith would tell her father. Mendez was
reluctant and said no. He told Faith to try some other sports.
Faith was only 6 yrs old, at the time.
After several years of training his other 4 daughters at a local
gym, Carlos Mendez and Sandra Mendez felt a need to open a gym
where they could not only train their daughters but also mentor
other young boxers.
In August 2015, they opened Almighty Boxing Club in Reading, PA.
Shortly after opening the gym Faith once again asked her father
if she can box.
Mendez continues; "She just kept on and on with that she wanted
to box and I kept telling her no but I told her I would show her
something that her sister couldn't do and that is to box
southpaw. So I taught her the southpaw stance," he said.
Mendez goes on; "For 6 years Faith has wanted to train, so I
finally gave in. She's been training in the gym with me and our
head coach Jose Espada (former pro fighter in the 80's), for the
past year and has won the Pennsylvania Silver Gloves and the
Pennsylvania State Golden Gloves at 101lbs. She also won a
Bronze medal and is Ranked 3rd in the US for participating in
the National Junior Olympics of USA Boxing. She came in 2nd
winning the Silver medal in the Women's Golden Gloves, and just
won the Ringside World Tournament, at 101lbs, in Independence,
Missouri," Mendez concluded.
Faith is back home training and preparing to participate in the
Sugar Bert Boxing Tournament in Georgia, this month for the
qualifier for November in Kissimmee Florida; which she already
qualified for but is going back for the experience.
The Mendez' eldest daughter Sharline Mendez is no longer boxing.
She has decided to take a break. Her record is 41 wins and 9
loses.
Faith Mendez' record is 10 Wins and 3 Losses; and she has only
been boxing for 11 1/2 months.
WBAN appreciates the Mendez Family for providing WBAN with Faith
Mendez' short bio. We look forward to seeing Faith blossom in
the sport.
