After a lot of
negotiating and will they, won’t they talk,
mixed-martial artist Conor McGregor – currently contracted to
the UFC, in which he is a two-weight champion – will be taking
on former boxing champion Floyd Mayweather Jr in Las Vegas, USA,
in a professional boxing bout.
How McGregor vs
Mayweather is expected to go Down
While a lot of
fans from each sport, as well as many neutrals, have become
infatuated with the mega-money affair, questions have been asked
of where else such an event could occur. Which women’s boxers
and MMA fighters could crossover for a fight that would rival
that of McGregor vs Mayweather?
As one would
imagine, Floyd Mayweather Jr is the favourite coming into the
"super-fight" as he was a legitimate boxer, whereas Conor
McGregor is transitioning from a much more open combat sport,
attempting to hone his skills into just boxing.
However,
McGregor looks somewhat underrated in areas that he could come
out on top. For example, with Mayweather Jr being the favourite
at 1/9 and the odds-on nature of the fight not to go the
distance at 2/5, that would hint at an expected stoppage win by
the American. However, in the Octagon, McGregor has taken
serious and condensed punishment and has carried on fighting.
When it comes
down to it, Mayweather stayed at the top of his division in
boxing throughout his defence but, as McGregor has very little
to lose from this fight and will be getting paid either way,
there’s a good chance that he will enforce some heavy offence
and stifle the American. So, McGregor – if anyone – would be the
more feasible bet for a knockout win at 6/1.
Right now, the
woman on top of the boxing world is Cecilia Braekhus, who
defeated fellow Norwegian Eric Anabella Farias earlier this June
to defend her five welterweight titles by unanimous decision.
Hailing from Colombia, Braekhus is 31-0-0 with eight knockouts
on her record and would be the perfect star to centre
a cross-sport bout around.
Unlike in the
McGregor vs Mayweather bout, there are plenty of viable
candidates for Braekhus to face who aren’t retired and boast a
lofty status in the opposing sport. For example, a long-brewing
grudge match that all were disappointed not to see - Cecilia
Braekhus vs Holly Holm.
Holm was a
much-revered boxing champion before crossing over to mixed
martial arts a few years ago and marked her move with an
earth-shattering win against the notorious Ronda Rousey. If Holm
were willing to cross back over to boxing to battle Braekhus –
an organised bout that was reportedly ducked by the
Norwegian a few years back – it would be a mega-fight.
However, a
bout that may already have the gears turning is Cecilia Braekhus
vs Cris "Cyborg" Justino. After moving to 29-0 in late 2016,
Braekhus called out "Cyborg", with the UFC star responding on
Twitter to see if they should fight in boxing or MMA.
With Braekhus
atop the boxing world, any big crossover match between her and a
star of mixed-martial arts would be a hugely entertaining
sporting event. It could also be more meaningful than the
upcoming ‘super-fight’, especially if Holm is involved.
