Three Fights That May Happen In Womenís Boxing In 2018 Championships
November 10, 2017

(NOV 10) Itís been a huge year for womenís boxing in 2017, but as we approach the end of the calendar year, there is the hope that 2018 can be even bigger with some mouth-watering contests in each weight division crying out to be made. Here is a look at three fights which may happen in the womenís sport in 2018.

Katie Taylor v Delfine Persoon

Katie Taylor is one of the biggest names in womenís boxing. The Irish boxer was dominant as an amateur as she won Olympic gold in London in 2012 and five World Championship titles before turning a professional. The 31-year-old is now the WBA champion in the lightweight division after she beat Anahi Sanchez for the vacant belt. That success in Cardiff now sets her up for a big unification contest next year. Her most likely opponent at some point in 2018 will be Delfine Persoon. The South American has held the WBC strap since April 2014 and has long been ranked as the best in this division. If this fight is made, it could be on the undercard of Conor McGregor and Paulie Malignaggi, which is being talked about as a matchup next year. Despite having just one fight in professional boxing, McGregor impressed the boxing news writers and is as short as 6/4 in the latest boxing odds to beat Malignaggi. Taylor has already featured on some huge boxing events from around the world so she would not be fazed by being part of the McGregor-Malignaggi undercard.

Hanna Gabriels v Ewa Piatkowska

Hanna Gabriels and Ewa Piatkowska are the two longest-serving world champions in the super welterweight division. Both women are very experienced in the sport but have yet to clash in this division. Gabriels, from Costa Rica, holds the WBA and WBO titles at super welterweight, while Polandís Piatkowska would bring the IBF crown to the table, and there would therefore be a lot on the line if they do meet next year. Piatkowska is scheduled to defend her crown against Mikaela Lauren later this year, however, so she would have to overcome that test if the unification clash between the two stars of the division is to remain on course for early 2018.

Ana Laura Esteche v Erica Anabella Farias

There are only two world champions in the super lightweight division and they both come from Argentina. Ana Laura Esteche, who defended her WBA, IBF and WBO belts against Adela Celesta del Carmen Peralta, will be looking to become the unified champion in the division by beating her compatriot Erica Anabella Farias who is the WBC titleholder. Farias fought at welterweight on her last visit to the ring but was beaten by Cecilia Braekus. She is expected to return to super lightweight for her next bout and that could be against Esteche in 2018. The fight would be huge in Argentina but also one which would carry a lot of interest around the world.
