Boxing returning to the Arenas
by Benjamin Watt
October 6, 2020

(OCT 6) It almost feels like a lifetime since we have seen boxing in arenas but finally, with Auckland Returning to level 1 we finally get to see boxing back in the Arena.

This weekend Bruce Glozier will continue to promote New Zealand’s women boxers as Baby Nansen will take on Karen Te Ruki Pasene at Vodafone Events Centre. Originally this bout was for the WBO Asia Pacific Super Lightweight title with the winner being in line for a world title shot, but due to Covid messing up plans and boarders shutting, they had to have a mega downgrade to the PBC South Pacific title. The PBC South Pacific title will be the first of its kind as it has yet to have crowned a champion.

Giving a background on both boxers we will start with Baby Nansen. She is the former PBCNZ New Zealand champion, former WBC ranked boxer, has fought across the world including fighting at Madison Square Garden. Multiple Kickboxing and Muay Thai champion. With the boxing record of 8 wins, 4 loses and 1 draw. She has fought the best boxers in the world including WIBA World Champion Gentiane Lupi, 2x WBC World Champion challenger Melissa St Vil, Currently WBO World Champion Challenger Mikaela Mayer, and 2x World champion challenger Deanha Hobbs.

Karen Te Ruki Pasene is one of the toughest boxers in New Zealand, and you would expect her to be, being a mother and a Navy Officer. She is the current New Zealand Super Lightweight Champion. With the record of 2 wins, 1 lose and 0 draws.

Comparing them the have both lost to WIBA World Champion Gentiane Lupi, they have both won against Australasian Lightweight Champion Tania Reid. And I assume the winner should have a rematch with Gentiane Lupi to have a World title shot from the major four.

Looking at the undercard we have the return of one the most dangerous boxers in New Zealand, Panuve Helu (11 - 2 - 1) taking on returning boxer Jason Tuala (2 - 0 - 0). We haven’t seen Panuve in the boxing ring since November 2018 with his TKO win over Junior Maletino Iakopo. As for Jason Tuala, he hasn’t fought since 2016, but even then he only fought Salam Hermez in both of his fight winning easily by Knockout. You would assume that Panuve Helu would easily win by knockout by just breathing on his opponent.

We have the return of Said Salem (3 - 0 - 0) taking on Mark Arquiza (0 - 2 - 0). Said Salem hasn’t fought since November last year where he got injured in a tough fight against Ricky Curline. Mark Arquiza comes in with 2 loses to his record both from Australia, so we need to wait and see what he islike on Home soil.

Finally, we have the rematch between Aung Sanda (0 - 2 - 1) and Raihau Lehartel (1 - 0 - 1). The first match you could consider an upset draw where Aung Sanda made his return to boxing for the first time in 8 years and to come back with a draw against a tough Auckland Resident French Polynesian boxer. This will be one of the exciting fights of the night.

GA Tickets will be available from Thursday onwards but corporate table tickets are only available until Wednesday. You can get your tickets from the Glozier boxing Facebook Page. The event will be happening at the Vodafone Events Centre in Manakau on the 10th of October.
