Boxing as a sport
is generically seen as a purely male occupation. Big and beefy
men that swing punches packed with the power of thunder itself.
But truth be told, we live in an age where gender is starting to
matter less and less in terms of what sport is for men or women.
Boxing is no exception here and has for several years had a
healthy and bustling women’s league that is just as much fun and
engaging as that of the men’s league. In this article, we will
bring you a short overview of some of the most talented and
hard-hitting female boxers out there to give you an overview of
who to look out for.
Katie Taylor – A Rare Super Talent
Katie Taylor is arguably the greatest female boxer in this day
and age. Even if you were to put her against some of the male
league’s best boxers, she outranks quite a few of them. She has
been holding the WBA title since 2017, the IBF title since 2018,
the WBO title since March 2019 and the WBC + Ring Magazine title
since June 2019. Holding all of these titles at once is a very
rare achievement, and it has only been done by seven boxers in
the entirety of boxing history.
Interestingly enough, Taylor started out as a football player.
Who would have known that she would go from a rather unknown
footballer to a worldwide hero in the boxing community?
Mary Kom – An Indian Hero
When you think of the country of India it is not boxing
champions you associate with it. Cricket and rugby? Certainly.
Boxing? Not so much. But one of the world’s finest female boxers
hail from this land.
Mary Kom is an Indian Olympic boxer who, as the only one, have
won the Amateur Boxing Championship six times in a row. She is
also the only Indian to qualify for the 2012 Summer Olympics
where she won a bronze medal. .
Claressa Shields – The Undisputed Light-Weight Champion
Claressa Shields is a bit of a hero in the different weight
classes of boxing. In fact, she has won titles in three of them.
Since this year of 2021, she has also been declared the
undisputed champion of the female light-weight class.
Shields also holds the world record for becoming a champion in a
weight class through the fewest amount of fights. She is vicious
and deadly; a fierce opponent for anyone to take on.
Female Boxing – A Winner on Its Own
If you decide to watch a boxing match featuring one or more of
the female boxers listed above, you are in for a great time.
Female boxing does not enjoy the level of attention that male
boxing does. That is a shame, as the women’s leagues are
bursting with talented individuals who can fight just as well or
even better than most.
