"Hope
is the word which God has written on the brow of every man. (woman)"
-- Victor Hugo
Tonight, I lost my world title fight against
Vaia Zaganas
. Even though I did
my best, I still came up a bit short of my goal.
I could retire now and look back on my short, eventful career and have a
sense of pride. I have never quit and always gave my best. But, I am not
ready to hang them up just yet. I am only 23 and started boxing barely two
years ago. I am still getting better each time out and feel that my best is
yet to come. When I lose the ability to improve and feel that I can't win,
that is when I will retire.
This sport isn't made for quitters. If you can't bear the indignity of
losing, then you also can't fully appreciate the thrill of victory. Some
fighters have taken the easy road to the top, and women's boxing has
suffered as a consequence. To them I say, stop worrying about protecting
your record and prove that you are the best. If you lose, work harder for
the next fight.
In 5 days, I am having LASIK eye surgery so I can throw away my glasses
forever. That surgery will sideline me for 4-6 months. During that time, I
will still train and work to be a better fighter so that when I do come
back, I will come back with a vengeance. Thanks for all the supportive
emails I have received during the past few weeks. And congratulations to
Vaia Zaganas. A very good fighter who sets the bar for me to reach for.
There is one negative thing I have to say about Vaia though, and I wouldn't
bring this up if it were the first time. But, when she fights on the road
she or her management tells the ring announcer that she is from whatever
city she is fighting in, in order to get unfair favor with the crowd and
judges. Don't cheat Vaia, let your actions speak for themselves.
