LOS
ANGELES-With only one round of fighting in the ring in 17 months,
Sumya Anani
shredded any possible ring
rust with an impressive six round decision against
Lisa
Holewyne
on Saturday.
In front of more than 17,000 boxing fans Anani traded thunderous blows with
Holewyne (21-12-1) for all six rounds. A third round knockdown of Holewyne
from a wicked left hand seemed to decide the outcome for Anani. But Holewyne
recovered.
“I was hoping she wouldn’t,” said Anani (23-1-1) who was besieged by fans
after the fight. “She’s a tough girl. A real good fighter.”
The fight began with Anani pressuring her Hawaiian opponent in her bob and
weave style reminiscent of the great Henry Armstrong. While Anani moved
forward Holewyne continually moved away with her guard high, poised to
counter. A looping left hand by Anani was the most telling blow, but
Holewyne was unfazed.
Anani increased the pressure in the second and seemed to find her left more
effective. Holewyne was able to connect with a well-timed counter right
hand. Then Anani switched southpaw and was met with another solid right hand
at the bell.
“She fought me differently this time,” Anani said. “She was moving a lot
more in this fight.”
Perhaps angered by the last blow, Anani stepped up the pressure even more
for the third round and forced Holewyne to retreat faster. Still bobbing and
weaving, the Kansas-based junior welter fired left-right combinations and
caught a retreating Holewyne with a wicked left that dropped her. Getting up
slowly, Holewyne steadied herself and prepared for the onslaught. Moving
backward, she managed to hold Anani effectively and survived the round.
“She’s improved her footwork,” said Anani. “She was giving more angles in
this fight.”
After seeing Holewyne seemingly hurt, Anani entered the fourth round looking
for a knockout. A concentrated body attack was met by cunning Holewyne
uppercuts. Whenever possible Holewyne grabbed Anani to stop her attack.
“She (Holewyne) was fighting defensively,” said Brian Spicer a co-trainer
for Anani. “It’s hard to catch someone when they’re on the defensive mode.”
Despite a relentless attack, Anani couldn’t land that one big punch.
Holewyne slipped and moved while occasionally shooting rights. But Anani’s
non-stop combinations proved too much to overcome.
“I didn’t feel rusty. I never get rusty because I always train,” said Anani,
who was given a unanimous decision 60-53 by all three judges.
The fighter known as the “Island Girl” seeks a match against
Lucia Rijker and a return to the Staples Center where thousand got their first glimpse at
her. As she walked out of the arena floor, people swarmed to the rail to get
an autograph.
“It had been a long long wait,” Anani said. |
