from professional competition and the opening of the Messer boxing
and kickboxing club, RING SPORTS UNITED, in Bellevue, WA.
With the opening of their own gym, this dynamic
team will use their ring-proven experiences and expertise to bring
others into the competitive arena, and pass on the rigorous
training, technique and discipline it takes to compete with the
world’s finest athletes.
In keeping with this objective, a young
and talented 2008 Olympic Boxing hopeful, Jennifer Han (w/Kim,
left), was flown in from Texas for Kim’s Official Glove hanging
and to do some training, sparring and see the Seattle sites with Kim
and Mark.
The Messer’s work with all levels of skill and
ambition, believing in the outstanding fitness benefits of a
technically correct boxer’s/kickboxer’s training program.
"We like to accommodate individuals simply looking for an
effective fitness program just as much as those who want to
compete," Mark explains, "It creates a balanced, friendly
and energy-filled atmosphere. That’s what Ring Sports is
about."
RINGSIDE WITH THE MESSER TEAM
STARTING OUT
In the late ‘80s,
when Kim and future husband, Mark Messer, earned Martial Arts Black
Belts and together accumulated an arsenal of trophies, they decided
to stake their claim in the professional arena and formulated a
plan. Kim would fight. Mark would be the driving force to take her
to the top.
BOXING – IFBA WORLD CHAMPION
As a result of Mark’s focused training and diligent promotion, Kim
transitioned well into professional boxing. In August of 2000, she
was invited to Seoul, South Korea to become that country’s first
woman to fight professionally, coming away with the IFBA Jr.
Flyweight World Boxing Title.
DESTINY
As destiny would have it, Kim’s mysterious life began in
Korea. At the age of two or three, no one knows for sure, little Kee
Soon (Kim’s Korean name) was abandoned and taken to live in an
orphanage. Three years later she was adopted and settled in nicely
with her new American family, who loved her and supported the
visible athletic talents that came so naturally to her.
When one of the countless press kits sent out by
Mark reached an L.A. sports writer in 1999, the fact that Kim had a
desire to fight in the country of her birth sparked an international
effort to make that happen. The resulting shot at a world title
brought things full circle, creating Kim’s touching, yet powerful,
story of destiny.
RING
SPORTS UNITED BOXING & KICKBOXING CLUB – THE NEXT CHAPTER
Having
checked off all of the goals Mark & Kim had set during those
early days, there was one thing left on the list…to open a gym,
create a boxing community and train future Olympians and World
Champions. Looks like Kim & Mark Messer are right on track.
Special
thanks to John Brown, owner of RINGSIDE for contributing Kim’s
autograph gloves for this special occasion.
