  Rain Mako Biography

Rain Mako, born August 26, 1976 in Christchurch, New Zealand, and now lives in St. Kilda, Melbourne, Australia has joined the ranks of professional boxing and sports a 3-1-0 (1KO) record.

Mako moved to Australia in 1997, after growing up in New Zealand. Mako said, "Growing up in New Zealand, I always have visions of moving to a big city. When I arrived in Melbourne in '97 I fell in love with the city and never looked back."

Mako's most asked question about herself is how she got her name...Mako said, "Believe it or not but it was raining on the day I was born and that's how my mum chose my name!"

Mako talks about her most embarrassing moment in women's boxing..she said, "My most embarrassing moment was not making weight at the weigh in of one of my fights and having to stand on the scales totally NAKED in front of about 10 people ! She went on to say, "This is one mistake I will never make again."

Mako said that in regards to women's boxing, "Your sex shouldn't matter when it comes to sport. If you put in the effort to train hard, whether you are male or female, you deserve the rewards. Everyone I have met has been pretty cool about it & I haven't yet come across any negativity."

Mako is also a model turned boxer...and she said in an interview, "Looks are something that people are born with, and I have been lucky enough to have been able to enjoy success in modeling which has helped support my personal ambition to be a boxer. Modeling means you get to meet some interesting people, travel to amazing places and wear some great clothes."

Mako said that her parents support her wish to be in boxing, and the only thing that bothers them is that they are concerned about her getting injured. Mako said, "They love getting all the paper clippings I send home of my interviews."
Mako said in preparation for a fight, "I am usually starving myself before the weigh in (which is on the night before a fight) With my weight class it is difficult to find female fighters and I usually have to drop a couple of kilos just before a fight. After the weigh in, I relax at home, watch boxing videos and eat pasta, rice and chocolate."
