Team Rivers
Talks about
the fight in Guyana
June 1, 2004
(JUNE 1) WBAN was recently contacted by the Kathy Rivers Team, and they
talked about Kathy River's fight that took place on May 29, 2004 against
Guyana's light-heavyweight Gwendolyn O'Neil, in Georgetown, Guyana.
They told WBAN the following...
"Kathy knows when she goes to someone hometown you have to take it away from
her. Kathy lost the fight in Guyana, but the score they read, and
judging were all one-sided towards their girl Gwen O'Neil.
The fight wasn't a walk over-----it was closer then what they read. Kathy
knew she had to knock Gwen O'Neil out to win in her home land, So Kathy took
the fight to her. It was a very fast pace fight with a lot of punches thrown
by both girls. Kathy landing the cleaner punches out of the two, but wasn't
noticed with the crowd roaring for their girl. With all the hype of the
fight though out the country and television all week, It was the biggest
fight the country of Guyana ever saw and had. They had over 8000 people
attended to the outside stadium to see and support their country girl Gwen
fight against Kathy.
Even the President of the country and the
opposition leader showed up to support their country girl and to present the
world title belt to the winner. It was taped for television on a later date
for the country people in Guyana. Kathy Rivers didn't walk home with the
title and she was right about a knock out, which is hard to do. They were
not going to let the Title Belt leave the country. As a Competitor in boxing
this was the biggest woman fight I've ever saw. It almost reminded me the
Ali and Frazier fight in Africa, back in time. Kathy showed good
sportsmanship though out the week being the opponent----And endured pressure
from the people. She spoke with all media when asked and went to every
promotion event to promote the fight. Kathy showed she has true spirit to
become a true champion. Kathy is back for good in the boxing world and in
shape. She is ready for her next fight."
