(FEB 15) This week, it was reported in
the Sun Sentinel that Ada “The Ace” Velez was sentenced to 21 months
in prison after pleading guilty to grand theft. According to this
news source, Velez was arrested for giving away more than $100,000
worth of free play vouchers at the Seminole Coconut Creek Casino,
where she was a casino service representative, between March and
August of 2006.
Velez had left the sport in 2004, and made one of the strongest
comebacks when she re-entered the sport, and defeated Kasha Chamblin,
for the vacant IBA super bantamweight world title in November 2007.
WBAN picked Velez as WBAN’s December 2007 fighter of the month due
to that impressive win and comeback.
