(SPOKANE, WASH.) – Twelve boxers battled for their tournament lives on Wednesday night at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Women’s Boxing. The evening’s action at the Northern Quest Resort featured solely challengers bracket bouts while the winners bracket’s contestants enjoyed a night off.

The third day of competition opened with the first stoppage of the event in flyweight action. Tyrieshia Douglas (Baltimore, Md.) bounced back from her loss in Tuesday’s action with a fourth round stoppage of Taversha Norwood (Marietta, Ga.) in their challengers bracket contest. Fellow flyweight Virginia Fuchs (Kemah, Texas) advanced in the tournament as well, taking a 21-16 decision over Alex Love (Monroe, Wash.).

In lightweight action, 2011 USA Boxing National Championships silver medalist Tiara Brown (Lehigh Acres, Fla.) kept her Olympic dreams alive, pulling out a 12-11 decision over Bertha Aracil (Yonkers, N.Y.) in the first of two challengers bracket bouts. 2011 National Golden Gloves champion Mikaela Mayer (Los Angeles, Calif.) won the second stoppage of the tournament in her challenger bracket semifinal with Asia Stevenson (Washington DC). Mayer enjoyed success throughout the contest, stopping Stevenson at the 1:24 mark to move on to Thursday’s action.

Middleweight Franchon Crews (Baltimore, Md.) won a sloppy rematch of her Pan American Games box-off showdown with 2010 National Champion Tiffanie Hearn (San Diego, Calif.), pulling out a 27-26 decision. Raquel Miller (San Francisco, Calif.) enjoyed a very happy birthday, winning an upset victory over 2010 Welterweight World Champion Andrecia Wasson (Centerline, Mich.). Miller won a 7-6 over Wasson to advance to Thursday’s action.
