(JAN 24) In January 2022, rumors started
swirling about a potential fight between Irish boxing legend and
lightweight champion Katie Taylor and Puerto Rico’s Amanda
Serrano. Fans of women’s boxing have likely dreamed of such a
matchup—not only for the sake of getting two talented fighters
in the ring, but also for what such a huge fight could do for
the sport.
For decades, men’s boxing champions have dominated the
limelight, from Muhammad Ali to Floyd Mayweather. Today,
household names in boxing worldwide demand some of the biggest
checks for fights—even the exhibitions recently popularized by
the Paul brothers.
Taylor is indisputably an icon for boxing fans, while Serrano
isn’t far behind. With a potential 30 April date
set for Madison Square Garden in NYC, all eyes are on the boxers
and promoters as the details are finalized.
Eddie Hearn Pushing for Taylor’s Last Hurrah.
At age 35, Taylor understands that she’s nearing the end of her
professional career in the ring. In an interview with ESPN, the
boxer stated she wants to defend her lightweight title against
Serrano. After all, others may be mentioning retirement, but
Taylor herself hasn’t started considering hanging up the towel.
“I want to be involved in the biggest fights possible. To fight
Amanda Serrano, it would be the biggest fight ever in female
boxing.” After years of failing to arrange a fight, it seems
Taylor, and agent Eddie Hearn, will stop at nothing to see the
fight scheduled.
It will be a huge moment for both fighters; while Taylor has
dominated the lightweight division with little trouble, Serrano
hasn’t logged a loss in over a decade. At the moment, the fight
is scheduled to be streamed on DAZN, though more details are
pending. First, Hearn, who heads Matchroom Boxing, will need to
hash out the details with Serrano’s managers.
Putting Women’s Boxing on the Map
Amanda Serrano is managed by Most Valuable Promotions, which is
owned by Jake Paul (who’s also a client). In order for Hearn to
finalize a matchup, he first needs to finalize the deal with
Most Valuable Promotions. While not many in professional boxing
or MMA take the newcomer seriously, a fight between Taylor and
Serrano would go a long way in proving the company takes its
work seriously.
However, the potential fight comes at a pivotal moment in
boxing—and it has nothing to do with the Paul brothers. Instead,
the fight would be coming on the heels of a Claressa Shields vs.
Savannah Marshall fight. Coupled together in 2022, both will
help grow interest in women’s boxing.
Hearn Leading the Charge
Hearn and Matchroom Boxing are motivated to create major hype
around the fight. According to a statement made to DAZN, Hearn
said that the Taylor vs. Serrano fight would ‘create shockwaves
around the world’. First and foremost, it would be highlighting
the best of women’s boxing and helping to break down barriers
between male and female competitions.
Second, it might actually help legitimize Jake Paul’s presence
in the world of boxing—not just as an exhibitionist athlete but
also a legitimate promoter. After all, lending resources to
promoting women’s boxing worldwide is something the industry has
lacked for decades.
Already, Most Valuable Promotions has pushed for a better purse
for Serrano. Originally, the Puerto Rican powerhouse was slated
to face off against Taylor in 2020 were canceled after Serrano
backed out due to an insufficient offer.
At the time, rumors swirled that the offer from Matchroom didn’t
reflect the time and difficulties encountered in attempting to
hammer out a date and venue. Serrano’s manager said that
Matchroom had reduced the offer by up to 50%. Now, with Paul’s
team behind the boxer, it seems the fight will finally be
scheduled.
