Over the past few years there has
been a big push to bring women’s sporting as a whole into the
light and push to see increasing popularity in many different
sports however, the world came to a
halt with a global health crisis – but rather than damage the
growth of women’s sporting, it seems to have brought it further
into the spotlight.
For quite some time much of the
issue had been a shortage of competitive options and a limited
talent pool to choose from which had limited the growth of many
sports – it is something that had been touted as one of the
downsides for women’s football in particular as the lack of
competitive matches in the calendar and scheduling that didn’t
make sense would most likely be the downfall of the sport,
sample players for the 2020-2021 season would only take part in
a handful of games at just 29 matches across all competitions,
showing how limited options are for some athletes.
The other hand sees sports like women’s boxing which has seen a
lot of interest over recent years as an individual sport – it
has somewhat grown hand in hand with the rising prominence of
women’s combat sports as a whole as organizations like the UFC
have seen fantastic success in its women’s divisions with many
events outselling male counterparts recently, but when Claressa
Shields became the face of the Boxing vs MMA campaign it
highlighted the sport once more – with big events in 2022 like the Commonwealth Games too, women’s boxing will have a fantastic
opportunity to shine.
The same is also becoming true in the online space too with
further efforts to women’s sporting emerging in esports, but
this is still quite a slow process with limited athletes to take
part – as such, boxing could very much become the blue print for
success in women’s sporting alongside other combat sports – with
many athletes looking to take part and a growing number of
events to be presented at too, it’s something of a unique match
– despite fighters only fighting a couple of times per year,
there’s often little to no limit on how quickly new events can
take place, and may see much more attention in the coming year
as further efforts are put towards the success of women’s
sporting as a whole.
