Some of Boxing’s Greatest Female Athletes

Nearly a month on, there’s still some discussion going on with the split decision bout between Amanda Serrano and Katie Taylor to keep the Irish champions unbeaten record going strong and a rematch between the two will certainly lead to sparks flying once again with the first being a real contest.

As the sport grows and newcomers get more involved in the sport, there may be questions around who the GOAT’s of the sport are, so which athletes top out the list?

Holly Holm – The now UFC legend found her call to fame in the world of mixed martial arts after a spectacular head kick which took out the then seemingly unbeatable Ronda Rousey, but longer-term fans will have known The Preachers Daughter from her boxing career beforehand. Winning the IBA light-welterweight title, as well as the WBA, WIBA, IFBA, IBA, and GBU welterweight titles, three-time WBAN P4P champion too, Holm is the only fighter to hold a world-boxing title and a UFC title too. With a record of 32-2-3 in boxing, her record even now after a period of inactivity holds up to some of the best within the sport.

Claressa Shields – With plenty of attribution to being the GOAT of women’s boxing herself, Shields is a two-time Olympic gold medalist, with a solid 12-0 record in the middleweight division. Shields also gained a lot of notoriety during a hoped period of change into the world of MMA with two fights taking place in 2021 – Shields would go on to win one and lose the other – there’s still plenty of time to see further success in the world of boxing, but for now it seems Shields is focused on a potential career in MMA.

Amanda Serrano – As one of the most decorated fighters in all of combat sports, Amanda Serrano is famed as a seven-weight world champion and had been on a 28-fight win streak over the past decade until her loss to Katie Taylor. Not only involved in the world of boxing, Serrano has shown interest in professional wrestling and has also taken part in MMA bouts in the past too showing just how much talent she has in combat sports.

Katie Taylor – If Serrano is considered to be one of the greatest in the sport, and in women’s combat sports as a whole, then Taylor's victory over her even as a split decision propels her to the top – but Taylor has an impressive career already. Being an Olympic gold medal holder herself and now holding a record of 21-0 with six wins coming by knockout – at 35 years of age there is still plenty of time to get those numbers up too, and a promising fight career ahead whilst partnered with Eddie Hearn and Matchroom Boxing.
