Boxing is one of the most popular
sports in the world today. It is certainly the most practiced
combat sport / martial art, and by far the most popular to
watch. The history of boxing is long and complicated. Evidence
of the sport’s existence can be traced back to 3000 BCE, though
some historians theorize that it goes further back than even
that.
Today, boxing gyms around the globe are filled to the brim with
prospective boxers, looking to hone their skill so they can go
pro, or just get in a decent exercise. Boxing pay-per-view
events are some of the most expensive, and most frequently
bought PPV events in the history of television, and athletes
from the realm are some of the most celebrated.
Another aspect where boxing shines, is in the betting scene.
Boxing is one of the most popular sports on betting sites. These
websites cover a wide variety of matches and tournaments,
whether local, regional, national, or international. For
websites that do a great job of covering top athletes like Katie
Taylor, Claressa Shields, and others,
check out betstation.com.
Most prospective boxers will be familiar with the four styles of
boxing. The swarming, out-boxing, box-punching, and slugging.
However, newbies to the scene might not be familiar with a few,
rather unorthodox styles, that have none-the-less seen huge
success in the scene.
Counterpunching
The counterpuncher is the type of boxer who relies on patience,
psychological warfare, and endurance. The style relies on
waiting for the opponent to make a mistake, at which point, the
counterpuncher will switch from a defensive style into an
aggressive offense, either raining down a flurry of blows, or
putting all their strength into one, destructive punch. Star
boxers, such as Evander Holyfield and Muhammad Ali, have
incorporated counterpunching on a few occasions throughout their
career.
Southpaw
The southpaw style is a simple one. All it really refers to is,
the use of a left-hand dominant stance, rather than a right-hand
dominant one. While it may seem simple, the Southpaw is a
devastating opponent in the ring, as it completely shifts the
dynamic of the match. Often times, the Southpaw is at a major
advantage, as their style is unorthodox, whereas the opponent is
likely to be fighting with the right-hand dominant style, that
the Southpaw is likely used to facing off against
Manny Pacquiao,
one of the greatest working boxers today is the most popular
Southpaw today.
Switch-Hitting
Whereas the southpaw style refers to a boxer who favors their
left-hand, the switch-hitting style is used by a fighter who is
ambidextrous, capable of utilizing both hands to their fullest.
The style is quite difficult to master, as it requires a level
of skill with both hands that is either equal, or approximately
equal, however, for the fighters who could achieve the peak of
the style, it will serve as a powerful weapon in their
repertoire. Among the most popular boxers to be called
Switch-hitters, the cream of the crop are Mike Tyson and Tyson
Fury.
