Lani Daniels Ranked on top of the world
by Benjamin Watt

(OCT 7) Three-time New Zealand Champion Lani Daniels is currently on top of the ranking list after WBC released their recent update for the female heavyweight division. Daniels is now ranked 1st in the WBC and 2nd in the WBA.

On the 30th of September WBA and WBC released their most recent with the WBC updating their Heavyweight women's division for the first time in a year. Daniels was not ranked in the WBC in the previous month, but in this most recent update, Daniels shot straight to the top in the Heavyweight division. With the WBA, it saw the move of Lani Daniels going from 3rd to 2nd in WBA's version of the heavyweight division which they call the Light Heavyweight rankings.

WBA also saw a Sequita Hemmingway move from 5th to 3rd in the same division. Hemingways who receive her first ranking after defeating undefeated former New Zealand Champion Alrie Meleisea who was ranked high in all sanctioning bodies on Hemmingway's debut. Hemmingway went on to fight Daniels with Daniels taking home the win.

Promoter Craig Thomson is currently in negotiations with both Lani Daniels and Sequita Hemmingway's teams to host a rematch in Lani Daniels's first fight in her hometown in Northland, most likely in Whangarei. If the fight does end up getting signed off, there would be a guaranteed world title fight for the winner.

Daniels has been offered a world title fight against the current Unified World heavyweight champion Hanna Gabriels, However, Daniels's team turn the fight down as it was at short notice. Daniels’s teams have stated they welcome the opportunity in the future, which highly likely happen next year.

There have been three New Zealand women who have won the World title including Daniella Smith, Geovana Peres and currently IBF Super Bantamweight champion New Zealand born Australian Cherneka Johnson.

Currently, Daniels is the highest-ranked New Zealand boxer in the world rankings which include:

Lani Daniels: WBC 1st, WBA 2nd
Michelle Preston: WBA 2nd
Sequita Hemmingway: WBA 3rd
David Light: WBO 6th IBF 12th, WBC 21st
Mea Motu: IBF 8th
Andrei Mikhailovich: WBO 12th IBF 12th

If negotiations go well, the announcement for Lani Daniels vs Sequita Hemmingway II will probably happen over the next couple of weeks. Not much detail has been released, however, The Indoor Cricket Centre at Semenoff Stadium is the preferred venue. WBA International Super Flyweight champion Michelle Preston has been suggested to be on the undercard if the event goes ahead in Late November-Early December.
