Geovana Peres wins first Muay Thai title

(NOV 6) Former WBO World Light Heavyweight champion Geovana Peres has won her third Muay Thai fight, winning the WMC New Zealand Heavyweight title against Faith McMah by a split decision.

The Brazilian-born New Zealand citizen Geovana Peres retired from boxing as a world champion in 2021 and has now jumped sport to the world of Kickboxing and Muay Thai. So far her career is following a similar pathway as her boxing career when she debuted in boxing back in 2017.

When she debuted in Muay Thai she suffered her first loss, like she did when she debut in professional boxing. Peres took that as a learning curve and now in her third fight similar to her boxing career, she is now a New Zealand Muay Thai champion. Coming into this fight, Peres weighed in at 93 kgs, the heaviest she has ever been in her combat sports career. The title fight was set at a 95 kg limit as it was a heavyweight title.

Peres took on an experienced combat sports fighter, Tauranga’s own Faith McMah, formerly known as Faith Van Duin who was a featherweight in MMA. Faith is well known for her fights in an Australian Promotion “Storm MMA” where she won the Storm MMA Woman's Featherweight Championship. She also went on to fight in America under the Invicta Fighting Championships promotion. The biggest moment in her combat sports career would be fighting a legendary MMA fighter Cris Cyborg for the Invicta FC Featherweight Championship on 9 July 2015.

The fight went over five rounds at a length of three minutes per round. This is the longest-length rounds Peres has ever fought in. Even in her World boxing title fight, even though they were ten rounds, they world 10x2min rounds.

Peres led into the fight as the more aggressive fight in the first two rounds. Around round three, the fight started to change its course and become a little closer, however, Faith ended up being the more dominant fighter in the last two rounds. Coming down to the scorecard it would definitely be close. MC on the night Isaac Savage would end up announcing the winner by split decision Geovana Peres.

After the fight, the commentators on the live stream company Combat service network (CSN NZ) would say the corner of Faith McMah was complaining to the promoter Tony Angelov and the officials claiming controversy. Words were heated at ringside.

Geovana Peres took to the Mic as she was being interviewed by Isaac Savage saying she believed she didn't do enough to win the fight, however, she feels she is always hard on herself. She gave full credit to Faith McMah as she was a true professional and a hard competitor. She thanked her Kickboxing coach who was also the promoter of the night Tony Angelov and her boxing coach Terry Reid Batchelor as they believe in her becoming world champion again.

Peres has stated she will be taking the rest of the year off before coming back for a busy 2023.
