Lani Daniels gets the fight of a lifetime with a confirmed fight with Claressa Shields
by Benjamin Watt
May 7, 2025

(MAY 7) Two-division world champion Lani Daniels finally gets the biggest career opportunity, as she fights for the undisputed World Heavyweight title on July 26th (27th NZT) against Claressa Shields.

We learned a couple of weeks ago that Lani Daniels has signed with a major international boxing promoter Salita Promotions, who is the same promoter for Claressa Shields.

Today it has been confirmed that the two-division world champion will take on the five-division world champion Claressa Shields on July 26th USA time, or July 27th NZT. This will be Daniels’s first fight overseas as a pro, where they will fight at Little Ceasars Arena, Detroit, Michigan, in Shields' hometown.

This is a history-making moment as many New Zealand female boxers in the heavier weight divisions dream of fighting Shields. On top of that, there has never been a New Zealander who has been a unified, let alone, undisputed, world champion in boxing. Lani Daniels has been the closest person who has held both the IBF World Heavyweight and IBF World Light Heavyweight titles at once at the end of 2023.

This truly shows who is the best of the best in the heavier weights, as the number one in the world for the Heavyweight division (Shields) takes on the number one in the world for the Light Heavyweight division (Daniels).

This comes at a good time as Lani Daniels was already in training, preparing for a fight with Nailini Helu, before that got cancelled. Instead, she continued her training camp, preparing for the fight against Shields.

For those who don’t know Shields, she is a two-time Olympic gold medalist (2012, 2016), three-time world amateur championship gold medalist (2013 in youth, 2014 and 2016). She made her professional boxing debut in 2016 and quickly won her first world title fourth fight in 2017. She went on to win world titles in five weight divisions and become an undisputed world champion in three, being the only boxer between male or female, to do so. She also held the lineal title in two weight divisions in Middleweight and Super Welterweight. This is due to a lineal title not currently existing for the heavyweight division for females, however, this fight could change that. Outside of boxing, she also fought in three MMA professional fights.

If you are worried that you won’t be able to see it, there is more good news as the fight will be broadcast online with DAZN. It is unknown at this stage if the event will come with the general DAZN streaming package or if there will be an additional charge to view the event (PPV).
