She became the first woman to lead the organization, which was founded 57 years
ago, in 1968.
For the organization’s top leader, this extraordinary meeting held in Houston,
Texas, was memorable. He was not only welcoming the new president, but also
bidding farewell to the man who had led the NABF for so many years, the man
responsible for making significant changes within the Federation, the dear
friend who is always there and who, regardless of the circumstances, speaks to
you directly to tell you when he disagrees with something.
“Duane Ford has been an example of hard work for me, of how things should be
done, a friend of my father and a great mentor to me. His dedication and love
for boxing have taken him to the top, and today I am certain that his example
and values have permeated every member of the NABF and those of us who have had
the fortune to know him.
The election of our beloved Joana Aguliar was a historic moment for boxing, and
of course, for this great Federation that has produced legendary world champions
such as Muhammad Ali, Sugar Ray Leonard, and Saúl Álvarez, to name just a few. I
am confident that she will do an impeccable job, as she is a boxing woman whose
greatest motivation is hard work and passion for our sport,” he commented.
He also commented on some of the topics discussed during this meeting,
including:
Strengthening the women’s boxing program. Therefore, a new committee was
appointed under the direction of Michel Hemlin (Canada) and Deborah Hawkins
(USA). and Paulina Brindis (Mexico)
Coordinating the training and certification programs for judges and referees,
continue developing the remote judging program, and monitor the work on the new
Enhanced Scoring System, Instant Replay, and Open Scoring, under the direction
of Barry Lindeman, Secretary General of the Ring Officials Committee.
Strengthening social responsibility programs through WBC Cares, led by Jill
Diamond and Christiane Manzur.
Finally, Mauricio wished the new NABF President, Joanna Aguliar, every success
and reiterated the WBC’s full support for the Federation.
