in South Africa

(OCT 12) Women’s boxing has undergone a transformation in South Africa over
the past two decades. This journey in women's boxing, has been marked by significant milestones and
advocacy. From the prohibition of female boxing to
the establishment of a vibrant boxing community, the progress is both inspiring
and vital to acknowledge.
The story of women’s boxing in South Africa begins with the Boxing Act of 2001,
which was a turning point for female boxers. Prior to this legislation, women
were not permitted to box professionally, effectively sidelining half the
population from participating in a sport that had long been dominated by men.
The passing of this act allowed women to obtain licenses and compete
professionally.
This legislative change sparked not only participation but also heightened the interest in
women’s boxing.
In August 2007, South Africa had its first women-only boxing tournament,
held at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre in Durban.
This landmark event, promoted by the enterprising Mbali Zantsi, was officiated
entirely by women, showcasing the talents of female boxers in an environment
solely dedicated to their skills and achievements.
During this tournament, rising stars Noni Tenge and Unathi Myekeni made
headlines by winning their matches decisively. Both Tenge and Myekeni
went on to secure World Boxing Federation (WBF) championships further into their
boxing careers.
Fast forward to 2025, women’s boxing in South Africa is
experiencing great progress, by the newly established Women in
Boxing (WIB) Committee under Boxing South Africa (BSA). WBAN is
still attempting to grasp the historical changes in South Africa and we found a
Youtube on someone who may be able to explain it more in detail.
The WIB Committee is instrumental in promoting female-led boxing events,
encouraging organizations like Aquila Boxing Promotions, Aphile Boxing
Promotions, and Rise Boxing Promotions to lead the charge. One noteworthy event,
"The Rise of Women in Boxing," took place in September 2025 in Middelburg.
WBAN will be publishing the results of this tournament soon.
