LAS VEGAS, NV - In the defining era of
late-1990s women’s boxing, Deborah “Knockout” Nichols, fighting out of Dalton,
Georgia, Nichols created her own legacy in the sport during an era when female
fighters faced immense structural struggles, and lack of promotional backing.
Nichols, a retired IBA World Featherweight Champion, undefeated at 10-0-2 (3KO),
is a modern Trailblazer Pioneer who fought when there were many struggles in the
sport. She fought from 1997 to 1999.

Before she ever laced up a pair of boxing gloves,
Nichols built a foundation in martial arts. In July 1991, she earned her karate
black belt at Ben Kiker's United Karate Studio in Georgia. This initial venture
into discipline and physical conditioning quickly blossomed into a passion for
full-contact combat. She then went into full-contact kickboxing, compiling an
impressive run with only a single defeat.
Nichols then stepped into the pay-per-view arena of
the World Toughwoman Contest. In 1996, at 33 years old, she boarded an airplane
for the very first time, flying to Detroit to test herself on a national stage.
Despite facing opponents who outweighed her by over 40 pounds. She ultimately
secured eight distinct Toughwoman titles.
On August 19, 1997, at the Music City Mix Factory, in Nashville, Tennessee, when
she stopped Teara Sanders by a TKO in the Third round, and then in about two
weeks or so, on August 26, 1997, she returned to the ring and fought Sharon
Yates, winning another TKO in the second round.
In February 1998, Nichols moved into the national spotlight when she was
featured on the USA Network's popular broadcast, Tuesday Night Fights, where she
secured a win over Austin, Texas policewoman Melinda Robinson. Later that same
year, she proved her talent by winning the first-ever nationally televised
women's boxing tournament, hosted by the International Female Boxing Association
(IFBA).
Other highlights in her career was when she fought other top females in the
sport that included Christine Kreuz, Sandra Yard, and ultimately winning the IBA
Featherweight world title against Dee Dufoe, in April of 1999, in a ten-round
bout, that took place at the Convention Center, in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
In an interview with Nichols she was asked about
details of her boxing career and she told WBAN, "Everyone thinks it’s all
glamour, all the traveling, the publicity. I was working 40-50 hours a week, I
was trying to raise my son, I never had time for myself. Even when you're at
home, preparing for a fight, you still in the gym, you're going over what you
did in the ring that day. It's a job. If you want it, you have to go after it,
it has to have top priority."

The fight with Dufoe, was the absolute pinnacle of
her athletic career when she fought Dufoe for the vacant International Boxing
Association (IBA) Women’s World Featherweight Championship. Nichols celebrated
winning her first world championship belt not at a glamorous nightclub, but
surrounded by family at a local International House of Pancakes.
Though her retirement from the ring was not entirely by her own choice at the
time, she successfully channeled her discipline into entrepreneurship and
community wellness. Returning to her roots, she became a certified fitness
coach, personal trainer, and the long-time owner and operator of her own beauty
and tanning salon in Dalton.
Decades after her final fight, her induction into the International Women's
Boxing Hall of Fame ensures that her sacrifices will never be forgotten. Nichols
fought at a time when women had to prove they belonged in the ring, and her
undefeated boxing record stands as an enduring testament to what raw grit,
self-determination, and unmatched athletic excellence can accomplish.
