Dies at 33 After 11-Year Battle

(AUG 13) FAIRFAX, VA — Prichard Colón Meléndez, the former undefeated
Puerto Rican boxing star, has died at the age of 33. His father,
Richard Colón, confirmed his passing on August 13, 2026,
stating, “I regret to inform you of the passing of my son
Prichard from this earthly world. He is now in a better place.”
Colón’s life changed forever during a 2015 match against Terrel
Williams. During the fight, Colón suffered severe brain injuries
from repeated illegal punches to the back of his head. He
subsequently spent 221 days in a coma and live the next 11 years
in a persistent vegetative state, cared for around the clock by
his devoted parents.
The tragic news has sparked an outpouring of grief and tribute
from the global sports community. In an official statement, the
World Boxing Organization (WBO) honored his memory, noting, “His
greatest fight became a testament to resilience and the
unwavering love of his family.”
The World Boxing Council (WBC) family also extended its deep
condolences to his mother, Nieves, and his loved ones, stating,
“Prichard's fighting spirit will never be forgotten. Rest in
peace, Champion.”
Fans and community members have widely echoed these sentiments,
remembering him as a great talent whose career was cut entirely
too short. Fans online wrote, "The Puerto Rican community and
the boxing world will always remember this great champion,"
while others added, "This breaks my heart... what a tragedy,
rest easy, condolences to the family."
Colón finishes his professional career with a 16-1 record. His
story remains a critical turning point for safety conversations
in combat sports, driving stricter enforcement and officiating
against illegal blows.
